Shaolin Kung-Fu Mystagogue (1977)

Also known as Killer Fist, Shaolin Mystagogue Kung-Fu, Wu Tang Mystagogue, Shaolin Zen Master is a Taiwanese production that has some very good qualities.  First off is the lead actors, Hus Feng, Carter Wong, Chang Yu, and Phillip Ko Fei. They hold their own in both acting and action.  As far as the action choreography is concerned it is so heavily edited for effect, and not very well, that it takes away from the martial ability of the actors.  That being said the film took me back to being 13 and watching “Kung-Fu Theatre” early Sunday mornings on an independent television station on UHF channels (that should date me a bit).  The English dubbing sounds like it is done by the same guys and gals that did most of the Taiwanese movies from that era, the bad editing, sped up fight scenes, and the poor music track made this film more nostalgic for me to watch.

The script is simple, Ming Rebels vs. Ching rulers with the Shaolin Monastery siding with the rebels.  Some gimmick weapons thrown in for fun and you have an enjoyable film to watch. What it does well is that it tells the story. It doesn’t run off on sub plots and twists. Bad guys, good guys, a fight, and the good guys win.
