Ep21

Episode 21 Yuan Shao and Cao Cao mobilise their armies

  • Zhang Fei informs Liu Bei that Cao Cao’s troops are catching up with them.
  • Zhang Liao & Xu Chu, with 500 expert Calvary, requests that Liu Bei return to court per the Prime Minister’s orders.  Liu Bei refuses.
  • When word returns of Liu Bei’s refusal Cheng Yu suggests sending the army out to retrieve him.  Cao Cao says no.
  • Zhao Yun informs Liu Bei they have Yuan Shu cornered in a temple with only 100 men
  • Instead of bringing in Yuan Shu as ordered, Liu Bei gives him the choice to commit suicide instead of suffer the humiliation of capture.
  • Liu Bei sends back the imperial seal to Cao Cao via Cao Cao’s men, but keeps the 50,000 troops to safe guard Xuzhou in case Yuan Shao attacks.  Cao Cao is furious
  • Cao Cao has Generals Zhu Jing and Lu Zhao executed for loosing 50,000 men to Liu Bei.
  • Cao Cao has Cao Ren give Che Zhou 30,000 extra men to defend Xuzhou from Liu Bei. Seconds later the reports come in that Xuzhou has already been taken by Liu Bei and Che Zhou has been slain
  • Cao Cao collapses under the stress
  • Liu Bei sends Mi Fang to deliver a message to Yuan Shao to rally against Cao Cao per the Emperor’s Blood Edict.
  • After listening to each of his advisers Yuan Shao mobilizes his army to defeat Cao Cao
  • Yuan Shao has Chen Lin compose an essay to be delivered across the lands about the evil nature of Cao Cao
  • Dong Chen and Ji Ping are overheard planning to poison Cao Cao
  • Cao Cao captures Ji Ping.  He then commands Dong Chen to join him at a banquet.

Emperor Xian watches in fear as Cao Cao’s soldiers strangle Consort Dong

  • Ji Ping commits suicide in front of Cao Cao and Dong Cheng to kep from being tortured
  • Qingtong (slave to Dong Cheng) is brought in to give evidence that Dong Cheng and Ji Ping conspired to assassinate Cao Cao.  Cao Cao then has him executed for betraying his master.
  • A soldier gives Cao Cao the Jade Girdle Edict which was found while searching Dong Cheng’s residence.  The edict implicates the Emperor and
    • General of the Chariots, Dong Cheng
    • Governor of Xiliang, Ma Teng
    • Colonel of Changshui, Zhong Ji
    • General of the Left, Liu Bei
  • Upon reading Liu Bei’s name Cao Cao swears to cut him up to pieces.
  • In full military armor and sword, Cao Cao along with a large military accompaniment comes to the Imperial Palace . Xu Chu grabs Consort Dong and drags her out to Cao Cao who is waiting in the reception
  • Consort Dong says it was her fault.  Cao Cao agrees that it was her and her father so he has her strangled. He also warns the Emperor that if there is a next time then the Emperor will be implicated
  • Cao Cao then has his own daughter, Cao Jie, declared Empress by Emperor Xian.
  • Cao Cao gathers the military and marches on Xuzhou to eliminate Liu Bei, then he plans to go after Yuan Shao
  • Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun make a pact to be Cao Cao’s enemy for eternity
  • Mi Fang arrives at Yuan Shao’s camp and asks for Xu You
  • Yuan Shao’s son has fallen ill and he refuses to go to the aid of Liu Bei
  • Mi Fang reports back to Liu Bei, also informs him that Cao Cao had retreated 30 miles and abandoned the siege
  • Liu Bei decides to launch a night raid not knowing it was a trap.  He is defeated by Cao Cao
  • Xu You convinces Liu Bei to join Yuan Shao as he now has nothing left.

Ep22 b

Liu Bei and Zhao Yun meet Cao Cao’s army at the gates of Xuzhou

Episode 23 Guan Yu surrenders to Cao Cao on three conditions

  • Xu You convinces Liu Bei to join Yuan Shao as he now has nothing left.
  • Cao Cao gets a report that 30,000 of Liu Bei’s men have surrendered and are now part of their army, they have taken Xiaopei however Guan Yu still holds Xiapi
  • Wounded soldiers inform Guan Yu about Liu Bei’s defeat. Upon hearing that he takes his remaining 2,000 Calvary to save Liu Bei or die with him
  • Cao Cao surrounds Guan Yu and sends in his general Zhang Liao who is known to Guan Yu
  • Zhang Liao convinces Guan Yu to submit to Cao Cao until such time as he learns the whereabouts of Liu Bei. Guan Yu’s conditions are that he serves the Emperor and not Cao Cao, that the Prime Minister takes care of Liu Bei’s wives, and that as soon as Liu Bei’s whereabouts are known he is allowed to leave.
  • Cao Cao excepts the conditions
  • Sun Ce & Zhou Yu meet the two Qiao Sisters.  They are married soon after
  • Cao Cao keeps sending gifts to Guan Yu, it upsets Cao Cao’s generals

Episode 24 Yuan Shao loses troops and commanders

  • Cao Cao presents the Red Mare to Guan Yu
  • Guan Yu thanks him as now he cand find Liu Bei faster
  • Xu You asks Liu Bei to help present a battle strategy to Yuan Shao to take on Cao Cao
  • Tian Feng opposes Xu You in the decision to advance, Yuan Shao listens to him and sends orders to halt there advance.
  • Liu Bei convinces Yuan Shao that his first order to attack was the best strategy
  • Cao Cao suffers a minor defeat by the hands of Yan Liang.
  • Cheng Yu convinces Cao Cao to summon Guan Yu to fight Yan Liang
  • Guan Yu kills Yan Liang 200 AD
  • Wen Chou volunteers to fight Cao Cao army. He duels with Zhang Liao & Xu Huang before the battle. The result is a draw
  • Guan Yu steps in and fights Wen Chou one on one and defeats him
  • Yuan Shao wants to kill Liu Bei for Guan Yu’s actions.  Liu Bei sends a secret message asking him to come over to Yuan Shao’s side.

Episode 25 Guan Yu’s lone journey over a thousand Li*

* A Li is a unit of measurement.  Also called a Chinese mile. It now has a standardized length of a half-kilometer (500 meters or 1,640 feet).

Pujin

  • Cao Cao and his generals refuse to meet with Guan Yu, so he departs without formality and without the gifts he was given
  • Cao Cao, Zhang Liao, and Cheng Yu meet Guan Yu on the road to see him off
  • Zhang Fei finds out about Guan Yu working for Cao Cao and is angered
  • Guan Yu kills Kong Xiu when he is refused the rite of passage because Guan Yu does not have papers from Cao Cao.
  • Meng Tan sends Archers to kill Guan Yu
  • Guan Yu rests at the State Guardian Temple, Bian Xi attempts an ambush at the temple but Abbot Pujing tips off Guan Yu.
  • Xiahou Dun halts Guan Yu’s attempt to leave and they battle.DUring the battle a commander arrives with documents for Guan Yu sent by Cao Cao but Xiahou Dun won’t let Guan Yu pass. Only until Zhang Liao arrives does he allow Guan Yu to leave

Episode 26 Reunion at Gucheng

  • Guan Yu meets Zhou Cang. He begs Guan Yu to take him as a follower
  • They reach a village where Zhou Cang tells Guan Yu of a bandit that has taken over the city.  The bandit is Zhang Fei.
  • Zhang Fei, still mad at Guan Yu for being with Cao Cao attacks his second brother
  • Cai Yang arrives with his men to avenge the death of his nephew.  Zhang Fei says he will only forgive Guan Yu if he proves his loyalty by killing Cao Cao’s commander.
  • Guan Yu kills Cai Yang with one blow.
  • Xu You reports to Yuan Shao that Guan Yu has left Cao Cao and slain five commanders
  • Yuan Shao sends Liu Bei to reunite with his brothers and bring them before him
  • Xu You instructs Liu Bei to join forces with Liu Biao of Jin Province as he has the men, money, and resources to challenge Cao Cao
  • Guan Yu adopts Guan Ping
  • Mi Fang catches up with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei and tells them where to find Liu Bei
  • All three brothers are finally reunited at Gucheng
  • Yuan Shao’s three sons join him bringing around 400,000 troops.

Episode 27 Yuan Shao suffers defeats at Guandu

  • Yuan Shao gathers a host of 700,000 men to annihilate Cao Cao
  • Cao Cao is told of the army three days after they marched
  • Most of Cao Cao’s advisors want to sue for peace however Xun Yu says they must go to war with a full host and at all speed
  • Cao Cao has trained up an elite force of 70,000 which he says can defeat Yuan Shao’s 700,000
  • Cao Pi is given 8,000 weak soldiers to defend Xuchang
  • Cao Cao only has enough grain for 15 days
  • Yuan Shao fortifies Guandu
  • Cao Cao discusses terms and has tea with Yuan Shao.  He is stalling
  • Xu You commands General Yuan Xi to take some Calvary to the rear of the army in case of an ambush.
  • Once Cao Cao had delayed them enough he retreated back to his lines and ordered the battle to commence.

Episode 28 Xu You betrays his lord and joins Cao Cao

  • Sun Ce is informed about the battle at Guandu and plans a surprise raid on Xuchang
  • Despite being outnumbered 10:1 Cao Cao is fighting off Yuan Shao to a stand still
  • Yuan Shao retreats from battel
  • Liu Bei comes to assist Yuan Shao with 5,000 troops
  • Realizing that Tian Feng was correct, Yuan Shao orders him released from prison and made his right hand man.
  • Xu You fearing for his own position convinces Yuan Shao to execute Tian Feng instead of promoting him
  • Tian Feng commits suicide with Yuan Shao’s sword
  •  Xun Yu advises Cao Cao to advance and attack
  • Guo Tu tells Yuan Shao that Xu You’s son embezzled grain from Yuan Shao.  His son said Xu You knew about it in advance
  • Tian Feng’s final letter to Yuan Shao places suspicion on Xu You
  • Fearing for his life Xu You leaves Yuan Shao’s camp and visits Cao Cao.

  • Xu You informs Cao Cao that Yuan Shao’s stores are not well guarded at Wuchao
  • Cao Cao attacks Wuchao
  • Yuan Tan informs his father Yuan Shao that Wuchao is in flames
  • Yuan Shao orders his army to march on Cao Cao’s camp..
  • Cao Cao, with the help of Xu You, anticipated that Yuan Shao would attac Cao Cao’s camp and they laid a trap lead by Cao Ren
  • Yuan Shao retreats to his main camp only to find that Cao Cao had attacked it
  • Retreating to his capital Xu You leads Yuan Shao into another ambush that leaves him with less than 100 riders
  • Liu Bei gets a report of what Cao Cao and Xu You have done
  • Liu Bei sends Sun Qian to Jingzhou as an envoy to Liu Biao
  • Liu Biao accepts Liu Bei to Jingzhou
  • Liu Biao will not commit to attack Cao Cao but gives Liu Bei the city of Xinye.

Episode 30 Liu Bei garrisons an army at Xinye

  • Cai Mao is unhappy that Liu Biao accepts Liu Bei, his sister is Liu Biao’s second wife
  • Liu Qi explains to Liu Bew that Cai Mao and Lady Cai are trying to convince his father that the younger brother Liu Chong should inherit and that he belives Cai Mao will kill him
  • Cao Cao had defeated Yuan Shao and took over the provinces of  Ji, Qing, and Bing
  • Cao Cao is now the most powerful warlord
  • Xu Chu kills Xu You
  • Cao Cao has Chen Lin arrested for penning a letter against him (ep21), but offers him a position as an aid instead of execution
  • Xu Chu brings Cao Cao Xu You’s head.  Cao Cao has him demoted to a foot soldier
  • Liu Bei meets Lady Cai
  • Liu Biao asks Liu Bei his thoughts on the succession of his two sons.  Liu Bei sides with Liu Qi.  Lady Cai overhears the conversation
  • Lady Cai tells Liu Biao that Liu Qi and Liu Bei are plotting to take over Jing Province and to destroy the Cai Clan
