Sword Master (2016)

Based on the wuxia novel “The Third Master’s Sword” by Gu Long, it was also the plot for the 1977 Shaw Brothers movie “Death Duel”.  Directed by Derek Yee who is not only an experienced Director and Producer but also a veteran Shaw Brothers actor who played the main character in “Death Duel”! Produced and scripted by the legendary (and my personal favorite) Tsui Hark.  Together they have created a beautiful wuxia movie with all the trimmings.  It is gorgeous to look at and the action sequences are spectacular to behold. I’ve never read “The Third Master’s Sword” so I don’t know how true to the book the story and characters are, however I really enjoyed the characters.  All of them are are just as colorful as the movie itself and you really get to know, and feel for the main characters.  So on that note the acting was really well executed.

However it isn’t perfect. I found the first twenty minutes to be confusing and much of the action sequences involves CGI and camera trickery which points to the lack of martial arts skill of the actors, but that is just my opinion.  Despite this minor flaws the film is truly amazing and it is no wonder why.  Just take a look at the cast and crew below and see just some of the films they have been involved in. Currently available on Netflix US and UK.
