Directed, written, and produced by Tsui Hark Once Upon a Time in China 2 is probably my favorite out of the original trilogy (I’ve yet to see 4-6). The second film takes place in 1895 in Guangzhou where Wong Fei-hung, 13th Aunt and apprentice Leung Foon are to attend a medical conference. However the White Lotus Society, a band of anti-foreigner, Luddites have become very influential. It is up to Wong Fei-hung to restore order.
Jet Li and Rosmund Kwan reprise their role and replacing Yuen Biao as Leung Foon is Max Mok Siu-Chung who plays the role for films 2-5 (Foon was not in 6). Also joining the film is Donnie Yen who plays a Chinese Commander. The action is everything you would expect from Yuen Wo-Ping and the story is well written allowing character development and gives the feeling of a natural continuation of the legend of Wong Fei-Hung and not episodic like many sequels leave me feeling. This film for me is amazing as I love Tsui Hark, Yuen Wo-Ping, Jet Li & Donnie Yen. Absolutely fantastic!
