Warriors of Heaven and Earth (2003)

I’ve been wanting to write up about Warriors of Heaven and Earth for sometime but I misplaced my original DVD some time ago (probably lent it out to someone and forgot). However this holiday I was surprised to find a new BluRay of this great film! Set during the Tang Dynasty (700 AD) along a stretch of the Silk Road Warriors of Heaven and Earth tells the story of a group of defected and wanted soldiers protecting a caravan of Buddhist scripts coming from India to China’s capital.  However the Turks want a holy artifact that is also being transported. The next 114 minutes tells the tale of brotherhood, sacrifice, and duty.

This film has an amazing cast of actors which only adds to the films well written story.  However Zhao Wei was mostly just to look at until a bit of action at the end of the movie.  Jiang Wen (now recognised in the West thanks to Star Wars: Rogue One) continues to show why he is one of the most respected actors in Hong Kong. Kiichi Nakai is a leading actor in Japan and his presence as Emissary Lai Xi proves he has the ability to perform with the best of them.  Wang Xueqi is an extremely versatile actor able to play any role given to him. I have to say that I really love this film. The story isn’t new, it isn’t full of twists and plots.  It is straightforward and tells a simple story with some very colourful characters.  It is a MUST see film!
