Adapted from Liang Yusheng’s novel Baifa Monü Zhuan, “White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom” did not do as great in the cinema as was hoped. Much of this is blamed on the fact that there was five screenwriters for the film. Visually it is lovely to watch but I must agree that it seemed like they were forcing too much plot into a short amount of time. I’ve only ever seen “The Bride with White Hair” (1993) staring Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung. I’m a huge fan of that film. However that is the only exposure I have of Liang Yusheng’s story so I do not know how faithful that or even this adaptation is. It wasn’t terrible but for the amount of money they had they should have been able to afford two good screen writers rather than the messy story contrived by five writers.
Liang Yusheng doesn’t seem to be as popular as Gu Long or Jin Yong, at least for making movies and TV series. I’m a big fan of both The Bride with White Hair story and Seven Swordsmen and I hope to seem more adaptations of them in the future.
