Original Title: Yang men nu jiang zhi jun ling ru shan
Directed by Frankie Chan and Produced by Jackie Chan this is set in the 11th century China during the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song dynasty. This movie is basically a failed attempt at remaking the Shaw Brothers classic The 14 Amazons (1972) which itself is a new version of the famous Folk Legend of the Yang family. The story of the Yang family is very popular and has had many film adaptations such as The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984), Legendary Amazons (2011), and Saving General Yang (2013).
Unfortunately this movie is not worth watching. The acting is only marginally bearable with Cecilia Cheung, Wu Ma, Cheng Pei-pei giving the best performances and even those are not that great. One must wonder if it wasn’t the fault of the director?
My biggest complaint is this film seemed to bounce back and forth between being serious and silly and failing to do either. I think they should have just picked a direction and went with it. The costumes were silly and would have worked if this was to be a comedic film, but it wasn’t really all that funny. Sure it had it’s comic moments but not enough to justify the horrendous armor and the gaudy shields and helmets!
It didn’t need a romance angle, it seemed wedged and forced into the movie. The could have reduced it down to just an understanding that there was something between some oc the characters, a deeper tenderness, and that would have sufficed.
It obviously had a big budget but it was spent in all the wrong places. I can only conclude that Frankie Chan was trying to recreate the magic of The Prodigal Son, which he starred as the main villain back in 1981. He not only missed the mark, but he failed miserably!
This movie is so bad that I didn’t even finish it. Hows that for a recommendation?
