Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (2003)

As with almost all of Jin Yong (Louis Cha) novelsl, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils has been made and remade multiple times in both movies and television.  Three movies have been made 1977, 1982, and 1994. It has been made for television no less than five times!  1982, 1991, 1997, 2003, and 2013.  Needless to say it is a very popular wuxia story with romance, action, loss, and personal growth of the characters.

There are several story lines threading through the tale of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils.  Duan Yu  is but one of them.  Played by veteran Taiwanese actor, singer Jimmy Lin (Master Swordsman Lu Xiaofeng, Butterfly and Sword), Duan Yu is the young naive prince of the Dali Kingdom.  Having run away from home so he wouldn’t have to learn martial arts Duan Yu would rather explore the world in peace and study Buddhist teachings.

Then we have Qiao Feng played by Hu Jun (Red Cliff, Bodyguards and Assassins) he is the ideal martial artist who is on the fast track of becoming the next Chief of the Beggar Clan.  But success breed jealousy in others and soon Oiao Feng is plagued by accusations fueled by prejudiced ideals.

Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom, The Four, Chinese Paladin, The Return of the Condor Heroes)portrays Wang Yuyan who although isn’t a martial artist, she has committed to memory a plethora of martial arts manuals and is considered an expert in the study of them and can predict what forms and attacks an opponent might use against her friends.

Xuzhu played by Gao Hu (Sword Stained with Royal Blood 2007, Return of the Condor Heroes 2006) is a monk with the unfortunate habit of constantly being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What needs to be paid attention to is the interactions and politics between family and clan factions.  It is very interesting and tells a story in itself.

40 episodes at 50 minutes a piece, Demi-Gods and Semi Devils (2003) takes the time to tell the story in vivid detail.  This is definitely one of the better wuxia series I have seen and I highly recommend it.  Most reviews are favorable towards it although some have criticized Jimmy Lin’s performance I found that it worked for the gentle character he played.
